A visit to the quaint and extraordinary beautiful Aberglasney Gardens, near Llandeilo in Carmarthenshire on a warm, but mostly dry Tuesday morning led me to take many photographs of flowers, architecture, insects and more.
Aberglasney was made famous by the BBC television series “A Garden Lost in Time” which followed its restoration. Today it is quite simply one of Wales’ finest gardens, and at its heart lies a fully restored Elizabethan Cloister Garden that is the only surviving example of its kind in the UK today. Beyond this, visitors can explore 10 acres of over 20 different garden styles from formal to woodland, right through to exotic and modern along with the fully restored ground floor of Aberglasney’s grade II listed mansion offer a stunning venue for weddings, exhibitions and events.
Armed with my Fujifilm X-T3 and new XF18-135mm lens, while photographing in MGA Colour Chrome+ I had a nice haul of photographs, although, as you’ll read after these images, I did have one little problem.

It was a great day for testing out the lens, although I did hit a couple of problems. The first problem was that very occasionally I missed focus, something I’m not used to doing. Not many, possibly 4 or 5 from the 250 photographs I took, I know some were just me firing off too quick, but not sure why some just missed focus.
A more disturbing point was I was using pre-shot to capture bees, which I usually have no problem in doing, but I forgot to set the shutter speed to a high enough value (only shooting at 1/100) so my bees in flight photos were awful. Very disappointed in myself, wasting precious bee photographing time!
It’s surprising how a change in equipment can change things slightly. But those issues aside, I was happy with the crop of photos I took… And talking of crop, as you can see, I decided to use square crops for these images, as I really like that at the moment. I’ll put up more in standard ratio soon, as obviously with the buildings, they work best in different aspect ratios.

Definitely fine shots. I like the blur of wings in a photo for motion mixed with a focused flower as if the bee or insect is an extra visitor.

Hello Mark, Really very nice pictures! I’m a bit jealous, you have so many beautiful places, I have to drive to the other side of the country to find something similar – luckily Belgium is the size of a handkerchief 🙂
The 18-135mm is a great lens, I really like it myself, although it could have been a little longer to be perfect, like the many Sigma and Tamrons from 18-200, but then weather-sealed.
But the image quality is stunning, you wonder why you need primes.

I live Belgium, it’s probably the country I’ve visited most, there are some lovely places to photograph there. Yes the 18-135mm is a great lens, in starting to really enjoy using it. Thank you for enjoying them 🙏
