The Gnoll, Neath. A Visit In Tweaked Provia (Straight From Camera)

We visited the Gnoll grounds in Neath on a hot and sunny day. A 230 acre grounds, filled with four reservoirs and ponds, trees, fields, wildlife and so much more, and a place that no matter how many times you visit, you find something new to explore.

Today’s task was a simple one. I’ve been shooting in quite muted colour profiles for a while, so today I wanted something to capture the reality of the day. So I made a few tweaks to the Provia film simulation and headed out with my trusty X-T3 and tried to capture the day.

All photos are resized in Photoscape X Pro, some may have been straightened or had small crops, but no colour alterations were made. I used my 15-45mm and 50-230mm lenses to capture different aspects of the day, and all EXIF data can be found in the images.

I’m very happy with the final look of the images. No white balance offset, just the following tweaks to the Provia film simulation:

Push/Pull (Exposure): 0EV (expose as you need)
Dynamic Range: DR400
Film Simulation: Provia
Grain Effect: Off
Colour Chrome Effect: Weak
White Balance: Auto
WB Shift: R: 0 B: 0
Highlight Tone: -2
Shadow Tone: -1
Colour: +2
Sharpness: +2
Noise Reduction: 0

As you see, it’s not much of a difference from standard Provia, but just has a little more punch, along with more controlled highights and shadows. I generally left the EV compensation at zero, but in some forest areas I changed this as needed. I might just call this one “Provia Punch”? Let me know what you think!

  1. Hey Mark, Provia Punch sounds great ! I’ve actually always missed that bit of oempf – punch like you say – with Provia, and here it is.
And now I have a camera where I can dial that in 🙂
    Great place where you’ve been,
did that chipmunk really keep posing for that picture? really great 🙂

    1. The squirrel did pose yes! Managed to get close with the 15-45mm!!!

I always felt the same with Provia so never used it, and decided to do something about it this week, and also make use of the DR settings more. I think it turned out ok!

      Thanks Marc.

    1. That’s how I feel more and more about photography. Would much rather get beautiful images in camera than spending hours editing them later. Thank you very much 🙏
