Remember I Said “My Lens Collection Is Complete”? Well…

I’ve said it over and over again recently. My lens collection is now complete! I have everything covered from 11mm to 500mm with my 11mm F/2.8, 20mm F/2.8, 40mm F/2, 85mm F/1.8, 24-70mm F/4 and 150-500mm F/5-6.7. So, my collection is finished! Is it not???

Well… Recently I have been lucky enough to have had the opportunity to be photographing events. I’ve photographed the gallery event , a prom, and in the last week, a wedding. All of these had one thing in common, there was a lot of indoor photography taking place!

At the gallery event recently, I realised quite early on that the 24-70mm F/4 lens, as good as it is, was forcing the ISO levels a bit higher than I wanted. In fact, for that event I switched over to my 40mm F/2 after only a few photographs. Of course, the Nikon Z6ii can, and does handle low light very well. However, in events like these it is so important to keep your shutter speed high enough to stop motion blur, while not having too much noise because the ISO is higher than it need be.

As you all know by now though, I am very much a prime lens photographer, so thankfully my prime lenses, with their better light capabilities, have been serving me very well. That said, part of the time, it would be nice to have a zoom lens that can happily cover focal lengths I need, while being good in bad lighting.

By accident, I discovered a lens that seems to suit my needs very well. The Nikon Z28-75mm F/2.8 (also badged as a Tamron lens). And then while watching and reading real-life reviews of this lens, I discovered that Tamron have a version 2 of it! It is perfect! While not as wide as a 24mm, it is more than wide enough for every occasion I have shot so far, plus it is a little bit longer and all at F/2.8.

So, going forward do I bite the bullet and pick up the 28-75mm F/2.8, or do I just stick with what I have got? For a very reasonable £750ish, it is tempting…

To be continued…

  1. Zoom lenses can never fully replace prime lenses. On the other hand, unless you have multiple camera bodies (what also could be an idea), constantly switching lenses doesn’t seem very practical. So yes, a high-quality, fast zoom lens seems like a useful choice for a photographer in the wedding and events business.

I’m really curious to see how this develops!

    Have a great sunday evening.
