A Little Self Portrait Session With The Nikon ZF

Damn! Since buying the Nikon ZF, it has already been through a lot, with images of the family, plants and flowers, portrait shoots outside, weddings and more. However, I had not tried it on an indoor session in a studio environment. So, I had a couple of hours spare, and as I’ve been feeling a little glum, I thought to myself “why the hell not!”.

All images are from the Nikon ZF with Godox XT2 trigger, along with the Godox TT685N flash. I was trying out my new Nikkor 35mm F/1.4 lens, and it did not disappoint! All images are straight from camera images, that have been resized for this little blog. I am striving (as always) to get things perfectly correct in camera, so I can do as little (or no) editing as possible.

My “studio” is just my boys bedroom, and I used a black backdrop behind me, just in case light leaked from the flash. Although, I am really happy with how I control the light these days! The room was actually in daylight, but I set the camera up first to ensure that it took totally black images. Once that is controlled, you can then just use the light from the flash etc, and have full control of the light!

Thank you for taking a look. Just a bit of fun today, but you always need to be experimenting and taking photographs to keep on top of your game.

  1. Hey Mark,

Really liked this series — especially intrigued by how you managed the lighting in a simple space like that. You’ve clearly got it down to a fine art.

Just wondering… have you ever thought of sharing more about how you set this up? Could be a fun angle and project for your readers — and I think quite a few would be curious to learn from it. I know I certainly would be.

Wel, just thinking. All the best, Marc.
