An Urban Portrait Shoot With Mark D

Mark seems to becoming a regular model of mine, and for that I am very grateful as he is amazing to work with and has a very unique style. I know a lot of male photographers are not so happy to work with male models, however, I enjoy it and I think it is refreshing to see male models rather than always seeing female models (but do not fret, as I have a female model coming very soon!).

Myself, Mark and my friend Phil headed to the centre of our town, Port Talbot, and we spent around 90 minutes taking photos in a stretch of interesting urban environment. All my images were taken on the Nikon Z6ii along with the 20mm F/2.8, 40mm F/2 and 85mm F/1.8, all images were shot wide open on each lens.

Here firstly, are my initial colour edits from the day.

Here are my black and white edits.

Once again, I feel I can always be a little more artistic with the black and white images, and so they generally have a different feel than those edited in colour.

I have started using ON1 Photo Raw 2025 once again as my main editor, and I honestly have not missed having Photoshop/ACR. I have even been using GIMP 3 (RC3) a lot more, and it does everything I was using photoshop for, so I am happy with that.

Thank you all for taking time to view my blogs.

  1. Hey Mark, you’ve captured another stunning series! Well, that Mark D. really is an amazing model – he’s got a bit of a ‘movie star’ vibe, don’t you think? Red is a bold and tricky choice for photos -looks like it caused a slight issue with the shoes, however, the shirt looks fine. I’m guessing they were a bit fluorescent, right? The black & white shots, in my opinion, have the most character – they look absolutely fantastic – but that’s just my humble opinion. Great shoot! I’m already looking forward to the next photo series. Have a great weekend, Mark!
