A Crazy But Fun Lens Filter!

I’ve had this filter for a couple of months now, and my plan was to use it on a few portrait shoots, however, due to various reasons, I have only managed to test the filter out very briefly. It is a halo, vortex prism filter that I picked up cheap from Temu (of all places), and I ordered it for a bit of fun.

The filter works best with lights behind it, and now the nights are getting darker, it will be fun to use. I have only tried this in the sunlight, and I was impressed. Here is the filter.

The glass is thick, and the filter is heavy. Its shape means that it disperses light in a very unique way, causing light to reflect in circular patterns. If you manage to catch the light off-centre, it will cast different light-leak effects into your image. Ideally, this filter is used for portraits, but I have seen it used for concerts and events.

Here are my initial test results, asking my boys to stand and move around while I took a few images.

I am not always one for filters, as by default, the effect that they create can not be removed and is baked into the final image. But that is the fun of this filter, every image can be unique, and every one a bit of fun.

There are a few other prism filters I am tempted to pick up, and I am sure that I will in the near future. However, first of all I want to use this on upcoming portrait shoots. As usual, we just need to wait for the weather!

  1. Nice catch, Mark. That prism filter takes me right back to the analog days with those wild starburst and kaleidoscope effects. Looks fantastic already, and I can only imagine what it’ll do with models and flash. Cheap little toy maybe, but the fun is priceless !
