Taking A Familiar Place And Photographing It Differently

As much as I love living next to the beautiful beach, lovely hillsides and great towns and cities, my local walk has seen me photographing it for over a decade. Today, I thought I would pop out and take some images that I would not usually take.

My idea from the outset, was to shoot square format, in black and white. I chose to shoot in Nikon’s Deep Tone Monochrome, in 1:1 ratio. No changes at all. I used my Nikon ZF, and these are the images, straight from camera, just being resized.

I really like square images, I just think they have a special look about them. It made the challenge slightly more difficult too! It is funny how much less frame you seem to have with square format. In order to have slightly more reach, I have a button on my ZF that switches from FX (full frame) to DX (aps-c crop) mode. That allowed me to have the standard 40mm, and an equivalent of 60mm when in DX crop mode.

I know people say why not just crop down instead of using a crop mode, but honestly, where is the fun and challenge in that? I am not doing anything with these images, other than sharing them on here and social media!

Let me know what you think about the images.
