Nikon makes the finest cameras, and it’s quite strange that they have not released a new point and shoot camera. However, rumour has it that they are working on a beautiful new… full frame point and shoot fixed lens camera.
There are a few great premium point and shoot cameras available, Fujifilm make their X100 series, Ricoh have their GR series, but these are just aps-c sensors, while Leica make some great full frame point and shoots with their Q3 variants and other models that are amazing but very expensive (just like the over-priced Sony RX1 mk III).
Here then could be the perfect middle ground for a new a Nikon point and shoot. Priced competitively against the hyped X100 and GR cameras with the quality of the extortionate Leica’s.
Rumour has it that the body will be based on the current cinema focused Nikon ZR camera (a lovely looking camera!), only thinner and with premium fixed lens. The full frame sensor is rumoured to be 30odd megapixels, which of course would be handy to allow in-camera “crops” (perhaps allowing 28mm, 35mm and 50mm from the same sensor as other cameras do). There is meant to be no viewfinder, but there will be an attachable one that you can buy as an accessory.

While some people just don’t “get” point and shoot cameras, the idea of a small, pocketable fixed frame camera excites me! A system of superior quality to your mobile phone, pick it out of your pocket and just point and shoot. Perfect!
Of course, what will separate this camera from the other offerings will be the a combination of pricing and the beauty that is a Nikon sensor (don’t get confused that they are Sony sensors, they are designed by Nikon but often processed in Sony plants for costing reasons). Once you have played with a Nikon Z full frame sensor raw file, it is hard to touch other raw files. They are incredible, with class leading dynamic range, extraordinary flexibility and beautiful colour rendition.
Based on the rumours, we are looing at a price of around £2300 or so, which, lets be honest, is a steal for a premium Nikon product. I am sure we will see this come to fruition in the near future, so I better start saving!
