As you all know, I love to experiment with my photography, and people photography with flash is something that I absolutely love doing. Although I have experimented with this type of photography before, here I have taken it to the extreme.
The technique here is based on using your camera, a fisheye lens and on-camera flash. I used my Nikon Z6ii, the not-yet released fisheye lens that I am testing and my Godox TT685 flash. Images were tweaked in RapidRaw 1.6.0 from the raw files.
The first four images with my son Samuel (in yellow) were simply test shots in my garden in preparation for a little shoot the next day. Sadly Sam could not make it, so George stepped in to be my model.
The effect was created in camera by adjusting the ambient light until it was dark, and then facing the on-camera flash directly at the head. The raw edits were only for colour grading, cropping to 5:4 ratio and for some basic masking.
I plan to do a tweaked version of this on a photoshoot taking place soon with a model. I am really excited to be using this technique, it is a bit more dramatic than my often used light and airy portrait images. I think with certain genre’s of themed shoots it will work really well!
