A Year Without Personal Photography Projects

2026 has been a strange year so far, usually every year I have at least one photography project running, and more often than not more than one project. This year I’ve been without personal photography projects and that is unusual.

Why Photography Projects?

The idea of photography projects is a simple one. To give you focus and direction. It gives you something to achieve when you go out with the camera.

It doesn’t have to completely take over your photography, and you can put aside time when you are doing your projects in order to collect images for them.

I’m my case, completed projects usually end up with a printed project, usually a large book or something similar. Over the years I’ve done many, and something like last year’s Prom People project really motivated me and the end result was an amazing book that not only myself, but others enjoyed too.

Of course my biggest project was the one that led to my hugely successful book “Alleys, Art And Architecture“, one that I am still hugely proud of you this day.

Why No Projects This Year?

Life has a strange way of getting in the way, plus often it’s just your mindset. Other than work with weddings, events and portraits, this year I did intend to finish my “Macro” project that’s been running for a few years, but I just didn’t get around to it.

While not a personal photography project, I did start the quarterly photography magazine Adventures In Photography at the beginning of this year, and that has taken off in a way that I never expected. We are getting images for the magazine sent in from all over the world and each issue has been downloaded hundreds of times and the print issue has had unbelievable success. Not bad for a not-for-profit photography magazine.

This year I just have not had the energy or even the ideas for my own personal projects, and that’s the truth. I have had an idea to revamp the website and replace the galleries with a projects based system, but I’ve not yet got around to starting anything. I’m sure I will at some point.

Future Projects

And this leads me in to future projects. As I mentioned I will be adjusting the website to add a projects section, which will become the main attraction of the website. I will of course need projects to fill it with.

I have a few ideas, and they’ll be based on things I do and the area I live. We’re talking seaside based projects, urban photography and potential wildlife photography. They will come to fruition very soon.

So, the best way to inspire me is to keep visiting the website, commenting and of course liking my posts here or on the platforms from where I share them.

  1. Looking forward to seeing your projects Mark. I am always lost when I have no special project,. but after my trip to Ireland and the coming one to the mountains, I will have projects to sustain me for the future. Have a wonderful day. Allan
