A Monochrome Sunset Experiment

We all know sunsets shouldn’t be in monochrome, especially when it’s a beautiful sunset in a beautiful place. However, I have hundreds of colour sunsets, and the sunset on February 8th 2021 was great, but not spectacular, so I thought I would experiment with something a little different.

After a few days of deliberation I decided to take my raw files from the evening and make monochrome versions of them. You’ve all seen Aberavon beach and Aberavon sunsets a million times on my blog. As we’re on lockdown, I don’t get chance to photograph anywhere else really! I hope this doesn’t bore you all too much.

All images were taken on my Fujifilm X-T3 with Viltrox 85mm F/1.8 lens and the raw file was edited in Darktable 3.4. It was more than a simple colour to black and white conversion, with great use of both the Tone Equaliser module and Local Contrast module among many others.

Here are the final images. I wanted bright highlights, and dark shadows, hopefully I conveyed that here.
