An Evening Of Longer Exposures At Southerndown

What started off as a murky, wet and horrible evening turned into something rather spectacular for the briefest of moments. We were lucky enough to capture a beautiful sunset at Southerndown, near Bridgend in South Wales.

Southerndown is a village in south Wales, near the coast. It has a beach that is part of a Heritage Coast and a Site of Special Scientific Interest. You can find fossils in the rocks there, from millions of years ago. There are also ruins of an old castle on the headland, which was once owned by different families and lords. The castle was destroyed several times by invaders and rebels. Now it’s a home for the blind and elderly. Southerndown has been used as a filming location for some TV shows, like Doctor Who and Sherlock.

I took my Fujifilm X-T3 with the 16-80mm lens and a 10-stop filter. For the filter exposures I used a tripod, but for shorter long exposures, I was getting around half second or more hand-held. Images were edited from raw in Darktable.

It was a night of pure photography, and pure photography talk. It was a night that I needed to get out and be a part of as after recent events, I had been pretty disillusioned with all that was going on with photography. Thankfully, like a phoenix from the flames, things have actually turned out much better than expected, and what was initially a hiccup in my life and my photography, turned out to be a blessing in disguise!
