A Fantastic Model Portrait Shoot

I am really starting to enjoy my model shoots lately, whether it be another person, or photographing myself, taking photos of people is becoming a passion that I am really enjoying. This time, we took our model Jess up the coast to Dunraven Bay, near Bridgend on a windy, chilly Tuesday morning and afternoon, and I think I took my best portrait images yet!

I took a bag full of tricks, including of course my Nikon Z6ii and a selection of lenses. Although, I only used the Nikkor Z40mm F/2 lens, and honestly, I enjoyed every minute of using it. I also brought along an old CCD point and shoot camera, my Panasonic Lumix FS10, and took a few images with that.

After completing a few test edits, I decided I would edit these images in Adobe Camera Raw and Photoshop, and use ON1 Photo Raw Max 2024 as the main plug-in. I experimented with a few images, and then settled on the editing style which you can see below. I am extremely happy with the results of the shoot, that is an understatement actually, because I think it is the best non-family shoot I have ever done.

The Nikkor Z40mm lens performed amazingly! I was unsure at first, as people say use the 50mm, or use longer lenses, but I was after a look, and I think the outcome was better than I ever expected. I experimented with some flash too, on the shots that are inside the little castle, and the shots where Jess is on the log. I am happy with those images too, but I really want to do more work with the flash.

As I said, I also took a few images with my Panasonic FS10 camera. A camera that is over 20 years old, with a tiny sensor, and very basic features. Here are the images from that camera… Again, I am happy with them!

These are a lot more filmic looking that the more modern sensored Z6ii, with noise and dynamic range issues, but I think that is part of their charm!

I hope you enjoyed this. If you like what you seen, please like, comment and subscribe! I would love to hear off you.

  1. Every photographer has his thing that he is best at, sometimes it takes a long time to discover that, with me it was birds and wildlife, with you it is indeed photographing people.
It’s a super beautiful series, and they’re all great, with nr1 and 29 being my favorite, with the landscape in the background.
Looking forward to your next model shoot Mark !
