A Few Days Away In Tenby With The Family And An Ancient CCD Camera.

This time last year myself and the family visited Aberystwyth in Mid-Wales, and I took images and made memories with an old CCD camera, a Nikon Coolpix P50. We were very lucky on that trip away as the weather was wonderful! This time, the weather was more… like usual… a mixture of rain, cloud, cold, warm, dry spells and an usually strange and warm couple of hours on one of the evenings! This meant that my camera of choice, the Casio EX-H5 was really put through its paces, in difficult lighting conitions.

I just wanted to prove once again, that your camera does not matter if you want to make memories, and nothing beats a tiny digiital camera that can slip in your jeans pocket, and pull out whenever you see a photo oppurtunity. Actually, the camera is so small, you can just hold it and not even notice you are carrying it in the grip of your palm.

The Casio EX-H5

The images are straight from camera jpegs, that I have straightened where needed and corrected exposure where needed (not many). I have not altered the colours, plus I resized the images for this website.

The camera, just like most of these little cameras, was just perfect for travelling! For capturing family memories, and travel locations, it is just amazing to think that this camera is almost 15 years old, very small and has a huge 24-400+mm range. In good lighting, or with the fill in flash, it takes amazing images. The first few images were taken in the rain, in misty dark conditions, and they do show the cameras limitaions (or unique characteristics!).

As always, it was a wonderful time away, and made even more enjoyable because I was not worrying about my camera, because with this little thing, you didn’t even know you had it! I also took a lot of video on this trip, and I intend to get a YouTube video up very soon.

  1. The photos look fantastic Mark, as does the camera 🙂

I always carry a small camera with me, which is sufficient for most regular shots. Just like in this case, if you hadn’t pointed it out, I don’t think anyone would have noticed. The quality is that good.

    1. That’s the thing. The World pushes for bigger, better and faster, but these old cameras deliver.

Autofocus is fast and accurate and sticks to the subject, 12mp is more than enough and that tiny sensor allows for that huge 24-400odd zoom! All in your pocket!
