Godox, Nikkor, Tamron – Flash, 35, Macro

As you may recall from a previous post, I was talking about getting a macro lens, and… well, that turned out a bit different to how I expected!

Godox IM33 – Mini Flash

Up until this point, I have had a selection of speedlights from Godox, Neewer and others, all rather large, plus of course my Godox AD200. Although these are all great, I thought it was time for a bit of fun, especially when with the family and friends. After much deliberation I chose the Godox IM22 as pictured below.

Why did I choose the IM22? It has a rechargeable batter that can take over 400 shots at full power, it has a fast recycle time of 3 seconds (faster when not full power) and of course it is tiny so takes up no space (plus it looks stunning on my ZF!). Another reason, and quite an important one, it is slightly raised, so on most lenses that I own, it will not cast a shadow!

Nikon Z35mm F/1.4

As my regular followers know, I love the 35mm focal length. For me, it is the epidemy of classic photography, and a lens I can literally walk around all day with and not want to change. Yes, I love my 40mm F/2 lens, and it is amazing, but this 35mm will give me a little bit of extra width in weddings and events, and more importantly twice as much light gathering, which is important for these things.

As a modern Nikon lens, it is more than sharp enough (I’m not a sharpness freak anyway), and at F/2.8 onwards, it is as sharp as the more expensive “S” series of Nikon lenses. The bokeh looks amazing, and I will be using this lens for portraits in an upcoming photo-shoot.

Tamron Z90mm F/2.8 DiIII Macro Lens

The lens I intended to buy, I also bought! The Tamron 90mm is a great lens for 1:1 macro work. I have owned many macro lenses in the past, but I have always ended up selling them, usually because they have been manual lenses, on cameras without IBIS. This lens has amazingly quick autofocus, and of course my Z camera have anything between 5 and 8 stops IBIS (Z6ii and ZF respectively) .

I am really excited about this lens, and look forward to getting insects, flowers and much more. I am thinking of using it for a portrait shoot too, and it might fill the shoes of my Viltrox 85mm F/1.8 for portraits if it is good enough! Being able to get much closer to models, with a slightly longer focal length will be interesting!

And that sums up this little blog. Please feel free to comment, like and subscribe!
