We asked photographers: What Operating System Do You Use For Editing Your Photos In Any Way?

It is always interesting to know and understand what operating system people use to edit and maintain their photography. We took a poll from a sample of over 100 people last weekend, and here were the results.

Windows 41%
Mac 34%
Linux 1%
Apple iPad 17%
Android (mobile/tablet) 6%

It is not surprising that Windows and Mac are the leaders here. It was more surprising though that only 1% (2 votes) use Linux, I thought it would have been a few more.

Mobile devices take up almost a quarter of the results, which I find interesting. It is so easy these days to edit your photos wherever you may be.

All results and more can be found on One Camera One Lens Photography Facebook page.

  1. Hey Mark, not so surprising I think – it’s a tiny, photo-editing–specific sample.
Two Linux users? I’m starting to think we might actually be winning ! 🙂
But seriously, when you buy a computer it comes with Windows or macOS, so the choice is already hijacked – same for tablets.
Linux machines are rare, commercial photo software runs on Windows/Mac, and most people stick with what’s preinstalled.
Big-name apps, school, work habits, and the “for nerds only” vibe keep it niche. Only a tiny fraction has the tech streak to take the leap.
Same with photo software: open source gets almost no traction. Mirrorless cameras? 45% Canon, 20% Sony, then a steep drop.
In Japan’s BCN Awards, Nikon and OM System fight for third. What gets promoted most gets used most. Computers, OSes, cameras – it’s all the same.
    Enjoy your Sunday, Mark.
