I had the opportunity to try out and review the Fujifilm XF56mm F/1.2 lens while visiting Penllergaer Valley Woods. It was a lovely spring day and a perfect opportunity to make the most of using this fantastic lens. Of course, I took many images as well as video, and you can see everything here!
I have been using the XF56mm F/1.2 APD lens for the last 5 days or so, as it’s a focal length I was quite interested in. I first test the lens locally on my daily walks, and then took it to the beautiful Penllergaer Valley Woods in Swansea. It’s a place I’ve visited a few times, and so I had an idea what I wanted to photograph. Here is the video from the day. It’s my favourite video I’ve made so far, and hopefully you will enjoy it to! If you do, please leave a comment on YouTube and most importantly, LIKE the video on YouTube!
My plan was simple, but like all simple plans, it got unstuck a bit. The place is such a beautiful place to be, and I’ve photographed it with both my 15-45mm on one occasion and my Viltrox 23mm on another occasion. Using the 56mm was much harder, plus I planned to photograph everything I could at F/1.2 to challenge myself. Here are some of the images that I took.
If you don’t watch the video, here’s a quick summery of what I think of that lens. It’s one of the sharpest lenses I have used, but its frustrating to use as the autofocus is really slow and misses quite often. Of course, if I had great eyesight I could manually focus, but sadly, that’s not always possible with my eyes depending on the light around me. It’s a shame, because it really is such a lovely lens.
Since giving the lens back, I have had more thoughts and I just find the focal length too long, just as I did with the 85mm I had. I like to shoot wider, and that’s probably why the 23mm is almost always attached to my camera. With the equivalent of 35mm, it’s just perfect for me and the photography I like to do.
Please let me know your thoughts and opinions. For the next video, I have a new set of filters which I will be using (they haven’t turned up yet, but hoping they will before next week). They are something I have been interested in, but kept pretty quiet about. Stay tuned to find out more!
