A Summer Pier Shoot With Claudia

We were lucky to have amazing weather for a shoot that had been planned for a long time by my fellow photographer David. We met up with Claudia at Penarth Pier near Cardiff and then enjoyed three hours of photography with an exceptional model.

Obviously I took along the Nikon Z6ii and the Nikon ZF, but unusually for me I brought along a total of four lenses. The Viltrox 20mm F/2.8 and the Viltrox 85mm F/1.8 lenses stayed in my bag though, while the Nikkor 50mm F/1.4 was attached to my Z6ii and the Nikkor 35mm F/1.4 was attached to my ZF.

All images were edited in Darktable using a colour profile that I put together for this shoot.

First we have the 50mm images, which were shot at a variety of apertures from F/1.4 to F/9.

And here are the images that were captured on the 35mm, all at F/1.4.

Overall it was a fantastic few hours and I am happy with the images that I had. However, I do have a few thoughts on what I should have done different. I know that I was primarily trying out the two new F/1.4 lenses, but I wish I had used the 85mm! That lens is so special, and I should have just used it. Also, at the last moment I left my fisheye lens in the house, and I think that would have worked amazing on the pier!

Anyway, you live you learn. The Godox AD200 was used for 90% of my shots, and the TT350 for the remaining 10%. It was a sunny day, and we were shooting into the sun for most of the day, so flash is essential.

I hope you like the images! Comments etc are always welcome.

    1. Yes, I LOVE 35mm for portraits. I just wish I had used the 85mm much more than the 50mm. As I’ve said before, I have never been a huge fan of 50mm… I will keep trying to enjoy it, but I find it neither long enough (like the 85mm) or wide enough (like the 35mm)!

Thank you very much Marc, appreciated as always.

  1. Yes, it is very nice; I like 35mm, very interesting to see what Viltrox 85mm looks like. I was wondering did you use any gels on your flashes?

PS. I hope this comment will work, as most of my never did … unfortunately.
