This is just a quick blog update with a realisation… This year has literally been unlike any other in my photography, and I only nor realised! As you all know, I am a sucker for prime lenses, and most have my work has been using prime lenses, however this year has been a little different.
Let me get this straight, I LOVE prime lenses, and I have used them almost exclusively throughout my career, but this year (since December 2025 actually) I have not used a prime lens for everyday shooting (I have used them for a portrait shoot, but even then it was mostly a prime).
What is going on? Suddenly I’m using the Z24-70mm F/4 and the Z16-30mm F/2.8 for everything! Let us look at some of the pictures from these lenses.

I don’t think I have done too badly! And maybe this year I will evaluate things. I have already sold my Viltrox 20mm F/2.8, so one less prime lens for me! Anyway, I am enjoying photography more than ever, so it does not matter!

Hey Mark, I think what’s happening is simply that modern zooms have become so good that the old prime-versus-zoom debate feels almost outdated. The quality difference today is often minimal in real-world use. Where primes still stand out is speed — f/2.8 or faster does give you more light and more control — but the real question is how often you truly need that. For most work, a good zoom is more than enough. In the end, if you’re enjoying photography more than ever, that says it all.
Have a great Sunday !

You’re right. I love prime lenses for the wide apertures, but more than anything because you know what you’ll get when you pick up the camera and take the photo, before you even take the photo, and the constraints of the single focal length generally create more creative thinking. But almost exclusively using zooms this year has been nice as I have just concentrated on the composition (and haven’t needed to “zoom” with my feet!) Maybe it’s made me lazy, but I’ve really liked the photos I’ve taken!
