Nikon P1100 feedback quick update.

First of all I would like to thank you all for taking the to treat the Nikon P1100 article I posted on this website and on various social media and sites on the internet. The response to the quick look at the camera was quite unexpected!

Firstly, as you would have known by reading that article, I’ll be having time with that camera over the next few weeks out of curiosity. As someone who does wildlife and bird photography for enjoyment away from my photography work, I’ve been really looking forward to playing with this camera. Now we just have to wait for the weather!

I’ve had numerous feedback to the article, so this is just to highlight a few of them. I’m glad that what I am seeing is not an isolated development, and it is happening everywhere (original comments can be found on the groups mentioned).

Alek from Poland writes on my photography Facebook page;

“Hi Mark.

At my favorite bird sanctuary, I’ve already met three photographers with a similar camera (I think it’s a P1000, 🤔). And they all praise the autofocus. The photos aren’t as spectacular as those from Full Frame or APS-C, but for wildlife enthusiasts, it’s a matter of having the shot or not having it. They’re concerned about the capture, not bokeh blur or HiRes quality. Then there’s the weight factor. I wouldn’t hesitate for a second… 🤩.

Thanks.”

While John from England writes in a message;

“Mark, for many years I carried around my Fuji system with 150-600mm lenses and I was happy, but moving away from the ecosystem because of my arthritis and using a second hand P950 I picked up very cheap has changed my photography. I’m getting bird photographs that I’ve never been able to get before and if needed a quick cleanup in Topaz and they look at good as anything I had before…”

I spoke to my friend Thomas who recently bought a P1100 and asked him why he bought it.

“…I now get the reach I have always longed for in a small and light system that weighs less than my old Nikon lenses. My Nikon Z6 is still my everyday camera, but for birds, which I do 90% of the time, the P1100 has been an absolute game changer.”

Of course, it hasn’t been all positive feedback, Eileen Bain from France on Facebook;

“Having owned the older P950 camera I was not happy with the autofocus performance although the image quality was better than I expected. In low light I found the camera unusable so I sold the camera after two years and bought myself a Fuji XT5 with a 150mm to 600mm lens with a converter…”

Overall we see very positive comments, and I was very surprised at the feedback, which makes me wonder if I should carry on with the series even longer than I had planned. The camera (and cameras like it) are definitely attracting long time bird and wildlife photographers. It certainly is not perfect, especially at longer reach where you need a tripod, but image quality (where it matters) is not putting anyone off, and that is a very positive sign.

Here is the actual P1100 I will be using…

Watch out for more on this adventure !
