A few days ago RapidRaw 1.6.2 was released. It had some great updates and fixes, and I’ve been using it to do actual photography work with after my week away. RapidRaw is fast becoming the number one photo editor. Not just because it is free, but because it is genuinely good, and the developer Timon is listening to people!
What is New?
You can watch my new video, not only does it go over what is new, but I also edit an image using the power of RapidRaw.
New features include:
- Focus Stacking – A super useful feature. I will demonstrate this in an upcoming video. RapidRAW now includes an intelligent Focus Stacking tool alongside the panorama stitcher and HDR merge features. Focus stacking lets you combine multiple exposures captured at varying focus distances into a single image with incredible front-to-back sharpness and extended depth of field. This is essential for macro, product, and landscape photography, where physical optical limits prevent keeping the entire scene in focus.
- Camera Tethering – A feature that is sought after by many photographers, this is a welcome feature. It is currently only available for MacOS and Linux machines.
- Built In Analogue Film Simulations/Emulations – See the video for a look at these. There are a good starting point if you have not already added your own collection of LUTS.
- Rewritten Sharpening Algorithm – Sharpening now works like it should have with this re-write. The sharpening tool now uses a multi-scale deconvolution algorithm with built-in halo suppression and directional edge smoothing. It enhances fine micro-details cleanly across the frame without creating harsh ringing artifacts or amplifying shadow noise.
- Drag & Drop Image Move System – You can now easily organize your library by selecting multiple images and dragging them directly into folders or albums.
Core Improvements Include:
- Full EXIF Metadata Preservation on Export: Exported images now preserve and embed full camera capture and EXIF metadata.
- Tablet & Touch Interface Restoration: Restored side panel layouts and controls on tablet and touch screen devices.
- Inpainting Auto-Cropping: Added automatic canvas cropping for generative AI inpainting workflows.
- Stability & Bug Fixes: Resolved various issues and refined overall application performance.

I wasn’t familiar with RapidRAW, but it certainly looks interesting. What appeals to me most is its lightweight design: a capable RAW editor under 20 MB is quite remarkable, especially compared with today’s increasingly large and resource-hungry applications. The combination of speed, non-destructive editing and GPU acceleration makes it well worth exploring. I’m curious to see how it performs in a real photographic workflow.
