WWT Llanelli Bird Sanctuary (Pt2 – Nikon P1100)

Yesterday we looked at the Nikon Z6ii (with the Tamron 150-500mm) images taken at WWT Llanelli. Today in Part 2, we look at the images taken with the Nikon P1100 and discuss impressions of the camera.

The Nikon P1100 is a premium bridge camera with a huge focal range of 24mm-3000mm, all without a digital zoom active. When you do activate a digital zoom you get 2x and 4x options, giving you 6000mm and 12000mm respectively. For these tests we did not engage digital zoom, and only used the 24mm-3000mm zoom range.

First, let us look at the images, and then we will discuss how I feel about the images, and if there is a future for this camera in my kitbag.

Honestly, I am more than happy with the output from this camera. You get lovely separation when zoomed in, the images are nice and sharp, noise is a minimum (all images were shot at ISO400) and at around 3000mm (the blue-tits, the butterfly, the large group of birds in the water and there were many more. The blue-tit was just a tiny dot to the naked eye!

Using the camera’s zoom is nothing short of watching a miracle happen. you can zoom in on things that you just can not see with your eyes. I found autofocus to be actually ok, both quick and accurate, but at 3000mm it did occasionally hunt (which can be expected).

Using the P1100 though, I really did not like the look of it, but it just felt so nice in the hands! It is so much lighter than my lens, and the lenses of those with me who had their micro-four thirds, APS-C and full-frame long lenses attached.

I have serious thoughts now. There is no denying that the Nikon Z6ii image quality is better, especially when viewed on my own screen and not on social media or the website. However, take that out of the equation, and the temptation is definitely there! I will do more with it over the next week or so and weigh up my options.

What do you guys think?
