May Project Complete. The Images And Thoughts On 85mm As A Daily Lens

There’s quick May flew by for me to complete my project… Oh wait! It is only just over half way through the month! Yes, I know, but I have cut the project short due to me having a new toy to play with, and having used the 85mm enough to give you my thoughts.

First of all I will let the images do the talking.

I loved using the lens. At first I was very apprehensive about only using the 85mm focal length, and nothing else, however when I got used to it, it all became second nature. It is surprising how quickly you can adapt to using a focal length. So much so, that when I used my 40mm on my new Nikon ZF yesterday, I found it very strange and extremely wide!

I can see how 85mm is not for everyone. You need a lot of room to work with it, however, you can also just isolate your subject and get different results. As you can see, I still used the lens for a lot of portraits, but that is just because in everyday life, sometimes we are just too busy to get out and hunt for subjects!

I love the isolation that the lens creates when you are shooting, separating the subject from the background is just special. I love the natural look it gives images and I like that you have to work out the composition before you get too close!

Do I have any negatives? Yes. As mentioned, it is long, and it feels long. You just can not be with a group of people and capture them, you have to either stand back or capture one person. You just can’t capture a building or scenery as you would with a wider lens, and that takes getting used to.

Will I use this lens more now? The quick and honest answer is YES! It will be fixed to my Z6ii, which the ZF has the 40mm. I think this combo, for the most part works well, although obviously, I will use other lenses as needed!

I hope you enjoyed my little project and thoughts on the 85mm, and please, please let me know your thoughts. But do not be too harsh on me for cutting the project short!

  1. Fully understandable, Mark, but still you’ve managed to capture another beautiful series – I especially find the bluebells stunning. And indeed, not an easy focal length, but if you don’t have another option, you adapt – though it does have its consequences for what and how you shoot. Best of luck with the new camera! Marc.
