It is always really nice to see a brand new camera, and I am excited by the new OM Systems Pen that is due for release at the end of October 2026. Like many of you I have been watching videos, reading reviews and looking at the official announcements from OM Systems and I thought I would share a little pReview for you all.
The PEN Returns: OM System Reimagines a Classic
OM System has officially announced the OM System PEN, a compact, retro-inspired Micro Four Thirds camera that officially brings the iconic “PEN” branding into the modern era. Blending the sleek, vintage aesthetics of the legendary PEN-F with the rugged, computational power of the OM-5, this new release targets travel photographers, street shooters, and content creators looking for an inspiring daily carry.
Early impressions from leading photography outlets like DPReview and PetaPixel show a device focused on the joy of the photographic experience. And for me that is important, as cameras should be fun!

Hardware: A Modern Rangefinder Design
The OM System PEN adopts a striking flat-top, rangefinder-style layout. While it trades away some of the premium metal dials found on the 2016 Olympus PEN-F to hit a friendlier price point, it makes massive usability upgrades:
- Built-in EVF & Articulating Screen: Unlike the previous E-P7, the new PEN integrates a built-in electronic viewfinder and a fully articulating touchscreen.
- Adventure-Ready Build: In a major first for this category tier, the camera features an IPX1 splashproof design, making it highly capable in unpredictable weather.
- One-Handed Ergonomics: The power switch has been moved to the right side of the top plate, allowing photographers to flip the camera on and shoot instantly with one hand.
Software: Computational Tricks & Instant Recipes
True to OM System’s identity, the camera is packed with computational features that allow you to skip the editing desk:
- Profile Control Switch: Positioned on the front of the body, this dedicated toggle gives you instant access to advanced Colour and Monochrome Creators. You can fine-tune saturation, curves, and shading to create in-camera film recipes.
- High-Res Modes: Includes a Handheld High-Res Shot mode that stitches images into a 50-megapixel file, alongside a 103-megapixel tripod mode.
- Creative Tools: Popular features like Live ND (up to ND16), Live Composite for light painting, Pro Capture, and Focus Stacking are completely integrated.
The Verdict So Far
The new OM System PEN isn’t trying to win a pure pixel-count specification war. Instead, it carves out a niche as an exceptionally lightweight, weatherproof, and fun tool for creators who want tactile control over their images the moment they pull the trigger. Alongside the camera, an updated, ultra-compact 14-42mm Mark III kit lens is also launching to keep the overall footprint remarkably small.
I used to enjoy my EP-L8 Pen camera, but that did not have an EVF. With the announcement of this camera, it is very tempting as a small everyday carry camera. When I get chance to use the camera in the near future, I will no doubt update you on this wonderful looking camera.
