Of course, some people will never even consider using jpeg, in that case, this article is not for them (or you if that is you!), however as jpeg is by far the most popular format that images are recorded on, we can take a look at the benefits, because there really are plenty.

If you are covering an event, shooting sports, or sharing photos on location, JPEGs allow you to transfer images directly to a phone, laptop, or client in seconds. We all know that the raw format is king for getting the best image quality out of your powerful new camera as it captures all the image data and is ready for you to edit and mould the image into something breath-taking.

However, the reality is, for most people, most of the time, jpeg is more than good enough for day to day photography. The simple fact is, cameras do an amazing job of jpeg processing. If you set the camera up, including setting up the colours (using a preset such as these for Fujifilm or these for Nikon Z cameras), you can get it right in camera and have the privilege of having awesome results the instant you press that shutter button.

We have all seen too-many times those who profess to only ever shoot in raw, but their images look like they are straight from camera jpegs (many wildlife photographers are really good at this!). Shooting in raw doesn’t suddenly mean that your final image will be better than those who shoot in jpeg.

And, as I say every time… Nobody knows, and nobody should care which format you take your images in. The only thing that matters is the final image that you present to people. They will never know if you shot jpeg or raw, it is simply impossible to tell, as you can go wrong using either format, or get an amazing result.
